The Pioneering Housing Initiatives Combating Climate Injustice and Empowering Communities
This year, the Awards go to eight outstanding projects that demonstrate innovative and transformative approaches to housing, from community-driven solutions to climate change adaptation.
The 2024 Gold World Habitat Award winners are pioneering approaches addressing the challenges of climate change and tenure insecurity:
Housing Rights in Jakarta: A community-led initiative in Jakarta, Indonesia, where residents of informal settlements successfully fought against forced evictions. In partnership with grassroots organisations, they secured housing rights, prevented evictions, and achieved city-wide policy changes to protect kampung communities.
Energiesprong: A Dutch project that has revolutionised home retrofitting with a system of prefabricated panels and smart green technologies, achieving a 70-80% reduction in energy consumption. Since 2011, it has completed over 10,000 projects in social housing across Europe and North America.
Each Gold winner receives £10,000, joins an exclusive winners’ network, and collaborates with the World Habitat team on international development opportunities.
The 2024 Silver World Habitat Award winners are:
Government of Chile Rural Habitability Programme: This program has improved the living conditions of more than 40,000 people in remote Chilean communities by building or renovating more than 10,000 homes.
La Ciguë is an affordable student housing cooperative in Geneva, Switzerland. Since 1986, it has expanded to manage nearly 740 rooms in central locations, offering financial relief to students.
The Bronze Award winners are CO-HATY in Ukraine, the DARJA weather forecasting service in Kenya and Tanzania, Nettelbeckplatz in Berlin, and New Ground in the UK!
